Overview of Senior Year

The information below is intended to provide a general overview of Class of 2009 senior year requirements and expenses for parents of Juniors. The information is subject to change.

Graduation Requirements

Credit Deficiencies

•  Senior standing: In order to be classified as a senior, a student must have earned a minimum of 180 credits.

•  Graduation: In order to graduate a students must have 240 credits and have satisfied the school's graduation requirements. (See Agenda, page 4.)

•  Course failures: If a student fails a semester course, she must make up that credit prior to the beginning of Semester 1 of the following school year in order to be re-admitted. If a student fails a year course, she must make up her full ten (10) credits for that year course in summer school prior to readmission in the following September. If a student fails in one or two subjects in June, she must attend an accredited summer school program, and successfully pass the course(s) in accordance with the standards set at the summer school in attendance. If a student fails to satisfy this requirement at the end of the summer immediately following the June failure, she will not be permitted to re-enroll at Bishop Conaty-Loretto in September. The grade/credits from the summer school in attendance must be transferred to Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School by the middle of August. .It is the policy at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School to dismiss any student who fails in three or more year courses .

Christian Service Hours

•  All students are also required to perform a minimum of 100 hours of Christian community service by the end of their senior year in order to graduate.

•  25 Christian Service Hours must be performed during senior year. She may complete these the summer between junior and senior year.

•  A reflection paper and project are part of the requirements.

Senior Project

•  All seniors must complete a senior project in order to be eligible to graduate.

•  The senior project is a project where a group of three to four seniors working collaboratively identify a problem, study it, and propose a solution for it. The project is a cross-departmental culminating task that demonstrates students' academic achievement and attainment of the school-wide expected learning results (ESLRs), and that prepares students for college and future work-place experiences. The project is a group activity because many college and most work-place experiences require group collaboration. It requires students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have learned at Bishop Conaty-Loretto high school as well as provide evidence that they have achieved the school's ESLRs.

Additional Expenses

Graduation Fee

•  A graduation fee of $150 is due April 1.

•  The fee covers the costs of graduation, including diploma, printing expenses, rental fees, purchase of student cap & gowns, etc.

Optional Expenses

Senior Sweater:

•  The senior sweater is an optional uniform item purchased by individual seniors through Albion Mills.

•  The price ranges between $165 and $200.

•  Ordering takes place in May of junior and is coordinated by the junior class moderator.

Senior Portrait:

•  Senior portraits are provided by Sanford Studios of Whittier, California.

•  Portraits are taken in mid-July at school according to a sitting schedule. Sanford Studios will directly notify seniors of there sitting appointments. There is a make-up day in mid-September. Missed portrait sitting appointments may also be made up in Whittier at the studio.

•  The senior portrait is the official senior yearbook picture.

•  There is a sitting fee. The price of picture packets varies depending on the package purchased.

KAIROS overnight retreat:

•  The KAIROS retreat is a four-day overnight retreat where the seniors are called to focus on their many relationships (God, friends, parents, family, and self) and the unique role of their faith. Through this extended retreat, it is hoped that the students will come together as a class and become better aware of their unique roles in life.

•  Two KAIROS are planned for next year: end of September, mid-February.

•  The cost of the retreat is about $225.

•  Reservation and payment are due before the retreat.

Prom:

•  The prom is a formal dinner-dance held each May at a local hotel or restaurant, selected by the class at the end of junior year.

•  The hours are from 7:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. Students and their guests may not leave before 11:00 p.m.

•  Attire is formal. Students and their guests are to dress and act accordingly. Dresses should be modest and appropriate for a Catholic school function. No extreme necklines, plunging backs, short skirts or slits higher than mid-thigh are allowed. (Refer to your Agenda for the Prom Policy.)

•  The cost of a prom bid (couple's ticket) ranges from $50 to $75 depending on how much money the class contributes from its fundraisers. Picture packets are an optional expense.

•  Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School does not sponsoring any pre- or post-prom parties.

•  Any student who attends the prom under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs will be removed and sent home with a parent. If her parents cannot be contacted, the police will be called in. The student will forfeit the right to participate in the graduation exercises, and more serious consequences may result.

Grad Night:

•  Grad Night is a final senior class field trip-party at Disneyland .

•  The price of a ticket averages between $50 to $75, if the class contributes the bus fees; otherwise it could cost more.

•  Grad night is an overnight event. Departure from school is at 9:00 PM and return is at 7:30 AM the next day.

•  Students and their guests who are intoxicated or behaving inappropriately will not be permitted on the bus for Grad Night. Moreover Disneyland reserves the right to remove misbehaving patrons at any time. Parents will be called to pick up any student removed from Disneyland .

Graduation Activities

•  The Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation Ceremony take place on the first Friday in June.

•  The Mass is scheduled for 11:15 a.m., sharp, and the Graduation will begin at 5:00 p.m., sharp. No one will be admitted to the ceremony after the doors close.

•  Graduates will wear white caps and gowns during both of these ceremonies. They must also wear light/pastel dresses or skirts, white or flesh colored pantyhose and white pumps. Dresses should not hang lower than the length of the gown. Make-up should be modest and hair must be styled in a way that does not interfere with the correct wearing of the cap . No jewelry or other adornment may be worn on the outside of the cap or gown. Leis, corsages and buttons are not allowed.

•  The Commencement Exercise is a solemn dignified ceremony offered by the school to honor your daughter's achievement in earning her high school diploma.

•  Parents will be allowed six tickets to the graduation; no tickets will be needed for the Baccalaureate Mass.

•  Graduates must attend rehearsals and the Baccalaureate Mass.

•  Participation in the Commencement Exercises is a privilege. Any student who refuses to adhere to the behavior and dress guidelines for the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercise, will not be allowed to participate and her diploma will be mailed to her.
