Summer 2008 Reading List for English 9

Welcome to Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School . The following books are required reading for this summer. On the first day of English class you will have to submit assignments and answer questions about the books. Assignments are due as follows:

1) Parvana's Journey by Deborah Ellis
If Parvana or Asif wrote a journal of their adventures what would it look like? Pretend you are Parvana or Asif, and write a journal (about10 entries) of your thoughts about your experiences and the people you meet. Make it look like a real journal. Due the first day of English class.

2) A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
Pretend that you are either Ruth, Walter, or Lena . Write a letter to any one of the other characters in the play expressing your concerns and feelings during the past few days. Type the letter which should be about one page long single spaced. Due on the first day of English class.

3) Read one of the following books and be ready to answer questions about it on the first day of English class:

• Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd, travels in search of fabulous treasure, only to learn the true value of following his dreams and listening to his heart.
• Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
  Seventeen-year-old Dimple, whose family is from India , struggles to fit in in America, and, to make matters worse, her beautiful best friend is stealing the boy she likes.
• Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez
  Warewolf Duke and vampire Earl are hired by the owner of an all-night diner to eliminate the zombie problem that is costing her customers.
